This video was presented to Blessed Sacrament as a departing gift from Fr. David Hoefler in June 2011. Thank you, Fr. Hoefler, for this beautiful tour of the church. We appreciate you sharing your stories and preserving the history of our parish.
Learning about our church inspired us to create a self-guided tour brochure to compliment this video. We referred to the 1930 dedication booklet for more information and discovered the two sacraments in the apse involving forgiveness of sin are reversed from the original intent.
The angel holding the “God is My Light” tablet is for Anointing of the Sick. The window below has an hourglass with wings and a vessel of holy oil with “peace be with you” written in Latin. The meaning is that time flies, and no one knows the day or the hour of death. Prayers, and anointing the recipient with holy oil, bring peace to the soul.
The sacrament of Confession is shown by the angel holding a chalice with a serpent coming out. This calls to mind the legend of an attempt to poison St. John the Apostle, but by his blessing, the poison of sin was drawn out in the form of a snake. The keys to the kingdom window represent a priest’s authority to forgive sin.
We are very blessed to share our love of Christ with everyone who views this video, and we welcome all visitors for self-guided tours. The brochure is available in the back of the church and tours are welcome after Mass has ended. Please no tours during baptisms, weddings, or funerals.
